Seeded eighth Venus and Skupskis will play either Julian Cash (Britain) and Robert Galloway (USA) or Americans Tristan Boyer and Emillio Nava in the third round.

The New Zealander has now equaled his best result at the US Open after reaching the third round previously in 2022 and 2014.

It's the only Grand Slam that Venus hasn't made the quarterfinals or better.

"Credit to those guys we watched the footage against Marcus (Daniell) and asked him about it. We'd never played either of them before, so it was good to get knowledge of how they played," said Venus.

"It took a little while to find our range and then we settled down and worked our way into the match and once we got the first set we found our rhythm."

Meanwhile top seeds Routliffe and Gaby Dabrowski made an impressive start to their title defence at the US Open with a 6-4 6-2 win over Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva in the women's doubles first round.

The match was moved to Arthur Ashe Stadium because the two singles matches earlier in the day both finished quickly.

t took one hour, 11 minutes for Routliffe and Dabrowski to defeat their Canadian and Kazakh opponents and Kiwi world No 1 was thrilled to be back on the big court again.

:"It was nice to get switched to Ashe, the last time we played there was the final. To get a chance to play so early, were' really happy.

"We knew we'd have to play our game and be aggressive against Leylah and Julia and playing first round you're always a little bit nervous and it's good to get through it," said Routliffe.

In the second round they'll face Catherine Harrison (United States) and Alicja Rosolska (Poland)
