It's been a tough day for the New Zealand golfers at The Open

Ryan Fox and Kazuma Kobori are the best of the New Zealand golfers after the first round of The Open Championship.


Fox and Kobori carded two-over 73s at Royal Troon on Thursday (Friday NZ Time) to be tied for 42nd, while Michael Hendry was a shot further back, tied for 69th, and Daniel Hillier, the fourth New Zealander in the field, at five-over..


LATEST HEADLINES:


Kobori made birdies at the fourth and 16th holes, but had bogeys at the first, eighth, ninth and 17th holes.


Fox had a consistent day, with pars on every hole except the sixth and ninth holes.


Hendry made two birdies in his round, but also three bogeys and a double-bogey, with a six on the par-four third hole.


Hillier's round featured a stellar four consecutive holes where he birdied the 13th, parred the 14th and birdied the 15th and 16th. Unfortunately the rest of his round saw him triple-bogey the sixth and 12th holes.


Englishman Daniel Brown leads the tournament at six-under, one shot ahead of Irishman Shane Lowry. American Just Thomas is two shots further back at three-under.
