New Zealand's Hazel Ouwehand has broken the national record in 100 metre butterfly twice at World Short Course Swimming Championship in Budapest.


The 24-year-old clocked 56.97 seconds finishing third in her heat to be the first Kiwi woman under 57 seconds.

The Paris Olympian then beat the time in the semifinals where she finished seventh at 56.60 seconds.


American Gretchen Walsh set a world record of 52.87 to qualify for the final, nearly three seconds ahead of second placed Louise Hansson of Sweden.


Meanwhile Helena Gasson reached her third semifinal of the meet with an eventual fifth place in the 100m medley.


She finished in a time of 58.70 seconds, the second fastest of her career, which was also the 30-year-olds final race before retirement.
