The NZ Breakers have parted ways with import centre Freddie Gillespie.

The Breakers have granted Gillespie a release from the remainder of his Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) contract, with the American big man reportedly set to sign with Olimpia Milano in Italy.

While Gillespie established himself as a game influencer in the ANBL, leading the league in blocks, and was a defensive presence during the Breakers' 7-3 start, he averaged just 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds a game.

Gillespie's introduction to the Breakers got off to a controversial start, copping a one-game suspension after headbutting Sydney Kings forward Shaun Bruce during a preseason game and missing the season-opener.

In nine appearances, Gillespie's best stat-line was 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in a 109-92 home win over the Adelaide 36ers at Spark Arena on November 1.

The Breakers are expected to replace Gillespie with former NBA centre Tacko Fall before their next game against the Illawarra Hawks on Thursday, November 28.

Fall, a 7-foot-6 centre who played 37 games for the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers from 2019-22, has been with the team since their three-game NBAxNBL tour in the US in October.

After picking up a quad injury, he never appeared on-court but did travel to New Zealand to continue his recovery and make appearances for the club.

Breakers CEO Lisa Edser thanked Gillespie for his professionalism and positive influence in Auckland.

"Freddie approached us and requested a release. While bittersweet, it was an opportunity that Freddie wanted to pursue and we support him. We look forward to watching his success in the future," she said.

"We thank Freddie for his contributions to the club on and off the court and wish him the best with his new team."

Gillespie extended his thanks to the Breakers for the opportunity.

"I’ve built great and lasting relationships with my teammates, the Breakers staff, and our incredible fans.

"I’m truly proud of everything we’ve accomplished together this season. As I look ahead, I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my journey."
