NPC wins for Lions, Canterbury, Northland


The Wellington Lions have scored a golden-point victory to extend their lead at the top of the National Provincial Championship (NPC).


With the scores locked at 25-25 at the end of regular time it was Lions replacement halfback Kyle Preston won the race to the ball just 58 seconds into extra-time.

Preston's cameo on the field paid dividends as her crosse for Wellington to defeat Bay of Plenty 30-25 at a windy Sky Stadium in the Capital on Saturday afternoon.







The Lions next travel to Pukekohe to face Counties Manukau on Friday (kick-off 7.05pm), while Bay of Plenty are at home in Tauranga to battle Northland on Saturday (kick-off 2.05pm).



A classic 'Game of Two Halves' as the home won 36-28, scoring all 36 of their points in the first half in Christchurch.


Dallas McLeod and Chay Fihaki both scored doubles while Jone Rova and Tom Christie grabbed a try each along with conversions by James White.


Not to be outdone the Counties Manukau replied with 28 unanswered points in the second half in a bizarre match.


The Steelers score four tries in their response including one to unwanted All Black Hoskins Sotutu.


Canterbury are on the road next Sunday (kick-off 2.05pm) against North Harbour, while the Steelers welcome Wellington to Navigation Homes Stadium on Friday.



Rivez Reihana made a big difference in Northland's win 47-24 over North Harbour.


He was successful five of his conversion attempts and also scored two tries, contributing a total of 20 points to Northland’s total.


Blues halfback also contributed a try, while a few former and current Super Rugby players in Simon Parker, Corey Evans, Jordan Trainor and Tevita Latu all crossed showing how dangerous Northland can be in Whangarei.


Harbour had New Zealand sevens player Moses Leo who will play for the Melbourne Storm in the future score while one-game All Black Shaun Stevenson also dotted down in an otherwise disappointing day for the Harbour side.


Next up, Northland head to Tauranga Domain to meet the Steamers on Saturday, while Harbour host Canterbury on Sunday.
