It was an impressive match from Sun, who played aggressive tennis, serving eight aces and looking to take control of points at the earliest opportunity.

After the first set where Sun didn’t give Noskova a look at a break point, Sun had a pair of break points early in the second, but was unable to convert them and it was the Kiwi who ended up being broken first.

Sun, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon should have broken in the third game of the second set, but missed a forehand, and Noskova recovered to hold serve.

It was Sun who then got broken, but she was able to break back when Noskova was serving for the set.

The remaining games went with serve, but the tie-break saw Noskova lose the first, third and fifth points with unforced errors.

In the second round Sun will face world No 15 Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine who she lost to in the first round at the Paris Olympics.

Last week at Toronto New Zealand's Erin Routliffe and Canadian Gaby Dabrowski were beaten finalists as they continue their quest to defend their US Open title in a couple of weeks.
