A tough day for New Zealand tennis players at the China Open in Beijing with a couple of early losses.


Lulu Sun lost her opening match at the WTA 1000 China Open, her first match since injury hampered her performance at the US Open.


LATEST HEADLINES:


Seeded 29th she was beaten 6-1 7-6(4) by American Ashlyn Krueger in the second round after receiving a bye as a seeded player.


In the doubles Sun and Moyuka Uchijima of Japan are down 1-4 in the first set against Timea Babos (Hungary) and Russia's Yana Sizikova with the match suspended due to the weather.


Top doubles seeds Erin Routliffe and Canadian Gaby Dabrowski play their first round match later today against Su-Wei Hsieh (Taipei) and China's Xinyu Wang.


At the men's China Open Michael Venus and Britain's Newl Skupski lost their opening round doubles match to the Italian pair of Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti 2-6. 7-6(4) 7-10.
