Injury has robbed New Zealand's Lulu Sun of a chance in her first round match at the US Open in New York after only a set.

Sun was in form, but had played a lot of matches of late after reaching the final of the Monterrey WTA 500 tournament which was completed around 10pm on Saturday evening.

By the time she got on court at the US Open it was 8.20pm Monday evening, not much time to go from Mexico to New York and prepare in a different environment.

Sun had beaten her first round opponent, Lucia Bronzetti from Italy a couple of weeks back in Cincinnati, but Grand Slams are a different beast.

Initially Bronzetti was hitting with good depth early on, but the New Zealander kept in step until the seventh game where she dropped her serve.

It was then Sun called for a trainer before a light sprinkle of rain delayed things even longer.

Sun said it was a process of things which injured her.

"I felt a pull in my gluts. They were already tight. I didn't have enough time for recovery. I mean it is disappointing to retire in any match. You don't want that to happen particularly coming from some good results to this," said the 41st ranked Sun.

Once they returned to play points again it was clear Sun, 23 was in trouble.

Bronzetti quickly went 5-3 up with Sun struggling around the court at times before the Italian won the ninth game to take the set 6-3.

Sun then shook hands over the net and stopped the match. She may still play doubles, but is unsure of what happens next.
