The European pair raced out to a quick lead in the match to take a 5-0 lead before Routliffe and Fernandez got on the scoreboard, however that was just one game in the first set.

In the second set it was a reversal as the kiwi and Canadian pair were able to quickly move to a 3-0 lead.

There was a change of momentum when Fernandez lost serve .in the fifth game as Kostyuk and Ruse fought their way back to lead 5-3 with some big hitting.

For third ranked Routliffe the result is an improvement on last year's first round effort and will keep her confident for Wimbledon in a few weeks.

She will team up with Michael Venus in the mixed doubles quarters against second seeds Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.tonight.
