Heavy overnight rain has prevented any play on Day 4 of the one-off test between the Black Caps and Afghanistan.

With the first three days passing without a ball being bowled due to a combination of rain and a waterlogged outfield at the Greater Noida Stadium, near New Delhi, India, it was more of the same on Thursday.

With the covers, which were over almost the entire playing surface, collecting standing water and the field soaked from weeks of constant rain, the prospect of play on Day 5 on Friday seem highly unlikely.

Only seven matches in test cricket history have been abandoned without a ball being bowled but the potential first-ever meeting between New Zealand and Afghanistan looks destined to be No 8.

The Black Caps will head to Galle this weekend ahead of two tests against Sri Lanka, starting Wednesday.
