Man of the Series against India, Will Young makes way for Kane Williamson at first drop with the former captain coming back from injury.

Black Caps opener and captain Tom Latham was enthusiastic for Smith making the side, the first 'Smith' since Ian Smith 32 years ago.

"He’s someone who has been successful in all formats and deserves his opportunity."

Latham explained that Young who had been a great asset in India should not doubt himself, despite missing out to New Zealand's best in Williamson.

"Anyone of his calibre coming back into your XI boosts things regardless of where he’s at," Latham said of Williamson.

"He’s done it all around the world for a long period of time, he’s done it in all conditions, so having that experience to lean on is great. I’m certainly happy to have him back."

The Test in Christchurch is the first of the three-match series followed by Wellington and Hamilton.
