Black Caps lose first test inside four days

The Black Caps have suffered an eight wicket defeat at the hands of England in the first test in Christchurch.

The Black Caps have suffered an eight wicket defeat at the hands of England in the first test in Christchurch.


Starving off an almost inevitable loss until a delayed lunch Nathan Smith, Tim Southee and lastly Will O'Rourke assisted Daryl Mitchell to get a lead just over 100 runs.


Smith reached a score of 21 and looked comfortable in his 44 balls, while Southee collected two sixes in his two scoring shots.

O'Rourke then played his his part with five not out from 39 balls.


Mitchell was eventually out for 84 after 12 fours and a six pushed New Zealand to a total of 254 and al lead of 103.


It was never going to be enough, but at least it gave the home side some hope of taking a few wickets.


At bat England had Zak Crawley out cheaply again, this time for one off eight balls, caught and bowled by Henry.


But his loss didn't mean much as the score raced along. Ben Duckett made 27 from just 18 balls including four fours and a six before being dismissed caught Henry, bowled O'Rourke.


Jacob Bethell completed his first test half century with 50 not out and Joe Root was 23 not out.


Player of the match was Brydon Carse for taking 10 wickets in the match, four in the first innings and 6-42 in the second innings - the first time an English bowler has taken 10 wickets outside of their home nation since 2012.


The second test begins on Friday 6th December at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
