Four players - Akuila Rokolisoa, Fehi Fineanganofo, Ngarohi McGarvey-Black and Moses Leo - all scored doubles, while McGarvey-Black crossed the line three times overall and Rokolisoa added five conversions.

Japan shocked Tomasi Cama's squad with the first try in the third minute but New Zealand hit back from Fineanganofo seconds later and went into the half up 26-7 after further tries to Fineanganofo, Rokolisoa and McGarvey-Black.

Rokolisoa had his brace 33 seconds into the second half and McGarvey-Black settled things with his second in the 12th minute.

In a tighter, potentially must-win clash against the Blitz Bokke, New Zealand started with a try after 71 seconds from Leo.

South Africa tied the scores two minutes later through Selvyn Davids but McGarvey-Black sent the ABs Sevens into halftime up 10-5 with his third try of the day.

With Cama introducing Regan Ware and Rokolisoa into the game early in the second spell, Leo soon dotted down for his second in the 11th minute to seal the victory.

The ABs Sevens face Ireland in their final pool match on Thursday (2.30am Friday NZT), with the winner taking top spot, before a quarterfinal later in the day (7am-8.30am Friday NZT).

The Pool A winner will play the second-best third-place finisher, while the Pool A runner-up will crossover against the winner of Pool C, which features Fiji, France, USA and Uruguay.
