New Zealand golfer Steven Alker has finished tied for second in the latest stop on the PGA Tour Champions.
Alker closed with a bogey-free four-under 68 in the third and final round of the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Washington on Sunday (Monday NZ Time) to finish in a three-way share of the runner-up spot.
LATEST HEADLINES:
Starting the day, seven strokes back of 36-hole leader Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Alker made back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth holes to get within two strokes of the lead as Karlsson made five bogeys in a six-hole stretch on the front-nine.
As four-time major winner Ernie Els of South Africa made a charge and South Korean Charlie Wi, second entering the final round, faltered early on the back-nine, Alker was within one after another birdie at the 12th.
Playing ahead of Alker, Canadian Stephen Ames birdied four of the last seven holes to get into the clubhouse at 11-under after a five-under 67.
Alker, who remains third in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, could only manage four straight pars and a birdie on the 18th down the stretch, finishing level with Els and Karlsson at 10-under.
The 52-year-old made just three bogeys in 54 holes at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge, all in an even-par 72 in the second round, which started with an eagle. He fired a bogey-free six-under 66 in the opening round, which concluded with an eagle.
Meanwhile, Ryan Fox has missed a spot in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs after missing the cut at the regular season-ending Wyndham Championship.
Fox shot rounds of three-under 67 and one-over 71 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, last week to finish at two-under, two shots below the cut-line.
It meant the 36-year-old ended 104th in the FedEx Cup standings, missing out on the top-70 to start the three-tournament playoffs.
Fox, who has played DP World Tour events this season (currently 81st in the Race to Dubai rankings) will now have to battle in the PGA Tour Fall season to retain his top-125 result to retain his full PGA Tour status.
The previous week, Harry Hillier finished tied for 11th at the PGA Tour Americas' BioSteel Championship in Canada.
Hillier closed with a four-under 66 in the final round at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario, ending the week at 19-under, seven strokes behind the winner, South African Barend Botha.
The 25-year-old made an eagle, five birdies, a bogey and double-bogey in the final round, after rounds of 65, 67 and 63. He dropped one spot to sixth in the tour's Fortinet Cup standings.
